CHRISTMAS PARTY

Christmas Party Evaluation

During Friday afternoon on December 13th, 2019, the Level 3 Festival and Event Management First Year class held a Christmas Party for the rest of the West Durrington Campus at Northbrook Metropolitan College. The Party included christmas covers from college bands, a mix of music within the current charts and classic music songs. Karaoke was also held once the bands had finished, within a christmassy decorated Theatre Bar.

The decision on the entertainment for the party was difficult due to different opinions held by the college staff and the class members on what it should consist of. The class agreed on the college's idea of karaoke, however collectively we felt that he college bands playing at the party would use up space for the possibility of both attendees and for dancing. There was also the concern about the music the bands would play. The class felt that the bands were more acceptable for entertainment once they found out that they had been learning, and therefore performing, Christmas songs.

Saffron created an amazing poster, with the support from the rest of the class on details that should appear upon it, that was put up around the college to advertise the event; however, due to the lateness of its creation, lots of people on campus were unaware of the party until that very day. This meant that lots of people had already made plans for that time. In future i would have the posters up around the college a week in advance to allow people to arrange their plans around the event.

The group had arranged for each person to bring in decorations in order to decorate the space where the event was being held; unfortunately it was hard for everyone to get their hands on any, as many were being used for decoration at home. Therefore, all decorations were supplied by myself, this included a large amount of tinsel as well as some baubles. I also supplied wash-out colour hair spray to add a bit more of a care-free element in order to make it seem a bit more like a party. Everyone within the group helped to decorate the Theatre Bar, including behind the bar and on the speakers, their stands and the microphones being used by the Bands. Decorating was enjoyed by all class members, all parts of the room were covered and the end result looked really good as well as very professional.

Over 50 students (and staff) attended the event and all seemed to be enjoying

themselves. The bands and the audience were comfortably interacting, even

when one individual member of a band became a little bit hard to control and

started to throw the college equipment around. I feel that in the future it may be

an idea to have a pre-event meeting with the bands involved and explain what is

expected of them. During the party, I done announcements in order to let the

attendees know what was happening and when, as well as welcoming them and

wishing them a merry christmas. Signs were also created in order to make it

clear to other members of the group what was coming up next, whether the

music would be a karaoke song, a song request, the band or just a normal

song. This was because I was sitting in one corner next to the laptop, and the

volume control whilst Daisie, who was also controlling the music from her phone,

sat by the sofa on the opposite side of the room. In future I would check with the

bands that they have all the equipment that is needed. At one point there was a

large pause between the bands performing due to one particular band needing

another part of the drums that was not originally set up. The range of entertainment catered to different parts of the audience. Everyone enjoyed the band performances but certain attendees who were studying musical theatre enjoyed karaoke once the bands were done. A large proportion of attendees did leave once the bands had finished performing, therefore spreading the bands out during the party would be an idea for the future.

There was no need to pack up once the event had finished as we were told to leave all the equipment in the bar for the following monday. It would have been difficult to pack up if we had had to due to the rest of the class either leaving just as the karaoke starting or just before it had finished. I did take down all the decorations from around the room anyway, apart from a certain piece of bauble tinsel behind the bar above the pumps as I knew the bar would be used for an outside event the following week and looked nice there. I feel that the event was an overall success, but with a few tweaks here and there, would be even better.
